When a person buys my cosmetic brushes, they always ask, how often should they be cleaned and what do I use to clean them? In this blog, I'll be sharing the correct method on how to clean your makeup brushes, along with a step-by-step guide on how to use Face It Skin brushes. These tips and techniques can be applied to any brand of brushes and makeup.
But first let's go over some facts about our brushes. Did you know our brushes are vegan? Even though our high-end brushes have no animal hairs, they sure feel like they do. Made from the softest fibers, Face It Skin brushes apply any powder, liquids, or creams seamlessly and easily. These were designed by me with a manufacturer in New York about 5 years ago. Our brushes are hand-packed, glued, and crimped, then hand-cut when set just right. Our handles are wood, so they are recyclable, aligning with our core values for clean beauty. We have a total of 8 brushes: 4 for shadow or liner, 3 for the face, and 1 very special versatile little lady. Below is the order of how to use our brushes when applying your makeup, with a guide to clean your makeup brushes.
The first brush used when applying your makeup will be our Concealer & Foundation Brush. Known in the industry as a paddle brush, this applies both our Dual Concealer and Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 very evenly in this order. To start, use the thin side to gently apply product just under your brow, moving downward to the corner of your eye, then turn the brush to its flat side and spread outward. The brush's width is ideal for covering dark circles while also highlighting. Keep it tucked under your lower lash line and spread the concealer in a "C" shape, wider than you might think, to highlight your cheekbones. To highlight more of the "apple" of your cheek, make a "V" point instead of a C. This technique helps create a smooth and refreshed appearance. Remember, your concealer should be a bit lighter than your foundation.
Using the same brush, apply our Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 in the shape of a "t," starting in the middle of your forehead, going down to your chin, then across from cheek to cheek over the nose, down to your mouth area and chin, then blending outwards for coverage. As you can see in this pic, it should just meet or slightly overlap your concealer but never go so far out that it's in your hairline. If you need more coverage for spots, use a concealer that matches your skin so it looks like skin when finished. The reason we want a concealer slightly lighter for under our eyes is for highlighting purposes to bring our eyes forward, and we certainly do not want to highlight a spot we are trying to cover.
The Kabuki Face Brush is probably my favorite brush because it feels so luxurious when applying our Finishing Powders. This tightly packed, fluffy brush can be used by buffing on powder to your face for the heaviest coverage or sweeping across your face just to set the Tinted Moisturizer and to be a base for blush. Be sure to blend down to your neck as well for a seamless look. We do not want a demarcation line... meaning a dark line on our jawline.
4. Full Sweep Eye & Face Brush as mentioned above is a very special versatile brush. This brush applies your base coat powder on your eyelid with one sweep and highlights the face! When using it on the eyelid, apply our Finishing Face Powder as your neutral base coat. When using it as a highlighter, I use Golden Vanilla Cheek & Shadow above the brow bone and just above the blush at the end of your makeup routine. Keep in mind that Golden Vanilla can be used anywhere as a highlighter and as your base coat for eyeshadow as well.
The Fluffy Angled Brush applies color in a half-moon shape that accentuates just below your brow bone uniformly. You will want to use a medium to dark shadow shade depending on the look you want. Place the brush flat side with the point tucked into your crease just below your brow bone and sweep left to right, going back and forth like a windshield wiper. This adds more depth and drama to your eyes.
Our Stiff Eye Shadow Brush applies shadow densely on the lower half of your lid. This is perfect for packing on a highlighter color or medium or dark shade depending on the look you want. To really add highlighter densely to the lower lid (next to lashes) use this brush. Another tip: In a rush? Use a dark shade, like our Bronze Shadow, and use this brush to line your lash line only, then follow with mascara, and you've got a soft Audrey Hepburn look. Be sure to have a powder base on your lid first.
Ever want to have a nice thin line? Our Angled Eyeliner Brush pairs perfectly with our Waterproof Gel Liners. After applying our liner run this brush across your lash line to smooth and thin. This is also the brush you want to get that perfect "wing" effect. Another way to use this brush is to directly make contact with our eyeliner then apply the product to your lash line. This will give you a more natural look.
Perfect for a smudged "cat eye" look, the Shadow & Liner Brush will not let you down. Simply apply any of our liners or our Pink Bronze or Bronze Cheek & Shadow, then scribble the product on, going back and forth using this brush. The more your scribble the softer and better the effect. Using our Shadow & Liner Smudge Brush lets you go for that Beth Dutton look with ease. It's so easy when you have the right tools!
Last but not least, our Your Best Blush Brush. Not too big or small, this applies cream or powder blush perfectly. Follow these simple rules to lift and highlight your cheek area without having to contour. Using our Color Sticks, draw about 5 lines starting on the outside part of the "apple" of your cheek, going outward and upward to your temple. To help, look in the mirror and visually stay on the outside of the middle of your eye (pupil) to start your first line and go out and upward. Use our brush lightly to blend, fading upward to the temple. This keeps just the inner part of the apple of your cheek open as a natural highlighter for prominence. It also draws attention to the top of the cheekbone for a lift. To use with our Cheek & Eye Powder, dip into the pot and brush on with medium strokes using the same mindset.
Now, here's how to take good care of any brushes...
Using Luxe Cleanser use 1 pump inside of our specialty grooved Face It Brush Cleaner Bowl. Place the brush you want to clean in the bowl then swipe the brush through the Luxe Cleanser and into the grooves swiping back & forth and circular motions. This will cut the cleanser into each bristle cleaning between many bristles. When the brush looks clean rinse, dab off excess water then lay the brush flat on a clean towel. Follow with the next brush. When the cleanser looks dirty simply rinse the bowl and add another pump then repeat the steps. I suggest doing this twice a month when wearing makeup most weekdays. Never place your brushes right side up in a container when drying. The water will seep down and loosen the glue shortening the life-span of your brushes.
