Whenever someone brings in their makeup bag to me they always say, "I'm a little embarrassed" and "I just don't know what to do or know if these things are good for me." Hey, just to let you know my makeup bag gets overwhelming too and I also get stuck but as long as our makeup doesn't look like the pic below we are doing okay. Right?! Okay, let's talk better makeup...
It's safe to say that makeup isn't the same as skincare, but we can certainly choose makeup products that contain quality skincare ingredients to ensure our skin can breathe while wearing safe ingredients when using makeup. The goal is to opt for non-toxic makeup that includes beneficial skincare ingredients. Additionally, it's crucial to maintain our skin and overall health by steering clear of certain harmful ingredients. But looking for the safe stuff is overwhelming. When choosing to go with a purely based mineral makeup line it should take the guess work out for you.
I want to discuss the difference between mineral makeup and makeup that contains oils or needing a primer which some say make your make-up last longer. This information is based on my professional opinion as a Pro Makeup Artist, Esthetician and Developer. Some of these topics concerning ingredients can be considered controversial, and my statements are not intended for anything other than sharing my personal and professional experience.
The model in the picture is wearing only mineral makeup. As photography techniques improve, and the quality of images get better, making makeup and skin more visible. However, heavy editing (includes AI) is still common for ads and professional shots, so we should focus on everyday makeup. It's important not to compare ourselves to magazines or celebrities, who often only have professional makeup done for their work, special events and only show us what they want us to see.
When it comes to makeup skincare should be involved. For better quality makeup the conversation about oil, water and silicone should not be too different than when we discuss makeup. For instance, most think, if you want your foundation to last longer and if you want more coverage, water or mineral-based products are not going to last as long as an oil or silicone. However, if you have problematic skin when using an oil or silicone makeup, you may want to be aware of the base, so that you can make an informative decision for yourself. In my experience the silicone based makeup will create a pore clogging problem most of the time and contribute to irritated skin. Mineral makeup actually solves this debate and minerals are long lasting, made from natural resources that won't fight with your pores and allows them to breath. In the video below I am doing makeup on a client and you can see the makeup going on but the end result is all about her skin then the makeup.
Laney is a fun client to work with and I thank her for her time making this video with State 33.
Over the years, many have claimed that foundation is bad for the skin and that the skin needs "air to breathe." When you select the right foundation for your skin type, foundation can actually offer a physical barrier against sun, pollution, etc. By selectively choosing a mineral foundation (liquid and/or powder) and looking at its ingredients, we can choose the best option for our skin and prevent certain skin issues such as breakouts and skin irritation. For everyday makeup instead of wearing a mask full of makeup opt for a tinted moisturizer that acts as a makeup! This should be mineral based and give you a minimum SPF 20. Needing more coverage? Top it with a mineral powder. Please always ask if these items are talc free as talc is a mineral and is embedded in the earth with asbestos and cannot be cleaned. This is a myth. We were supposed to see a proposed talc rule for testing for asbestos by the end of December of last year. So that's about a year behind. Ugh!
Another thing to consider when looking at a foundation "base" is that it doesn’t necessarily mean the other ingredients are not present. For instance, most foundations have some sort of oil in them so that they can stay on the skin well. The key is to find the right kind of oil. The proper skincare selection can be both primer and oil for your base. As a professional, I understand that not all oils are bad and are actually essential for skin health. I suggest relying on your skincare for the base and opt for a mineral foundation with little to no oil. These two will adhere nicely and require no primer.
I personally hate primer as it clogs and suffocates pores. The pic above is makeup I did with no primer but with the correct moisturizer for her skin that is compatible with Face It Skin Tinted Moisturizer. This is how I do all makeup, even for brides and the the reviews are always, "wow did my makeup stay on." Using a mineral based setting spray is always a bonus for special events for 24 hour wear.
As makeup finally heads to multi-use, meaning one product has more than one use, makeup companies are finally getting savvy. About 4 years ago I saw the need for makeup not to be so complicated and have been trying to influence more peers and clients to have dual purpose makeup. Our Color Sticks came out about 3 years ago and these make putting your color on your face so easy without a messy jar or powder. Each Color Stick can be used on eyes, cheeks and lips and takes our all the guess work. You can even mix up the colors. I just love a monochromatic look. This means wearing similar coordinating colors in my world and takes half the time to do. These have been so popular we have 3 new Color Stick shades coming early 2025!

Did you know the first overhaul from our FDA of ingredient regulations has been since before WWII? I encourage you to clink on and read the below article as our FDA is years behind the European Union for skin health safety. This is why you need to know what's in your beauty bag.
